President Trump’s narrative Wednesday night in his primetime economic speech leaned heavily on macro statistics and selective data points. But averages can mask real suffering:
- Grocery prices on some staples have declined slightly—but many other food items and essential goods remain stubbornly expensive.
- Inflation stayed above the Fed’s 2% target even as Trump claimed he “tamed” it.
And critically, most Americans don’t feel like prices are “coming down tremendously.” Polling shows that affordability remains the top economic concern—far ahead of housing or jobs.
“Economy is strong!” — Polls say: tell that to the household that chose between groceries and the electric bill.
