What Does It Mean for You?

“DEI” has been used as a buzzword, a dirty acronym, a political tool. First, people of color, transsexuals, drag performers, women, handicapped were vilified. The second step was to label them all DEI; lastly, a movement to push them all underground. Project 2025 comes to mind. You should pick up a copy. In contrast, the words Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are three powerful, positive words.

Historically, DEI was introduced during the civil rights movement the 1960’s in the United States to create equal opportunities for marginalized people and protect them against discrimination. Most recently, in 2021 President Joe Biden signed an executive order called ‘Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in the Federal Workforce’. In January, President Donald Trump in his attempt to erase all of Biden’s work reversed the order and banned DEI and started calling it out of all aspects of government and private sectors.
But what exactly does DEI mean, and why should it matter to you? Whether in the workplace, in schools, our government or in our communities, DEI is about fostering a culture where EVERYONE has the opportunity to thrive. Let’s break it down why Diversity Equity, and Inclusion are important:
